The UAMS South Central Family Medicine Residency program offers residents the opportunity to work directly with local specialists to provide in-patient medical care and specialty medical services. Formerly known as Area Health Education Center (AHEC), this program offers an outstanding three-year residency-training program for family physicians. Senior medical students from UAMS and out of state schools complete rotations of four to eight weeks with clinical faculty members in private practice serving as physicians/teachers. The JRMC Family Practice Center provides clerkships to introduce junior medical students to family practice through this learning experience. UAMS South Central Family Medicine Residency also provides many hours of continuing medical education for physicians and other healthcare professionals, and the Melville Library offers comprehensive library services to the area.
This is the only residency currently at JRMC. Family physicians supervise the Family Medical Center and inpatient service. Local specialists serve as consulting faculty and supervise specialty rotations. Residents learn to perform numerous outpatient procedures with a special emphasis on EGDs, colonoscopy and wound care. Specialty clinics at the FPC provide additional direct interaction between the resident, his/her own patient panel and the specialist.
