With 286 available beds, Jefferson Regional Medical Center serves as the major referral center for an 11-county area of South Arkansas with a patient base of approximately 220,000. The Delta Rivers Nature Center is another feature attraction not only for Pine Bluff, but Arkansas. The facility features hunting and fishing exhibits with dioramas of outdoor activities and collections of hunting, fishing and conservation memorabilia. An Arkansas Game and Fish Commission facility, the center’s exhibits reveal the natural history of the Delta, while its hiking trails through 130 acres of woodland “bottoms” give visitors a first-hand look at the vegetation and wildlife characteristic of the area. Among the center’s “living” exhibits are a 20,000-gallon “oxbow lake” aquarium containing native fish species, live snakes, turtles and alligators as well as landscaping with wildflowers and other native plants. Other features include a historical film and numerous preserved specimens of the Delta’s birds, mammals and fish. You’ll also find exhibits on the region’s hunting and fishing tradition, the changing nature of Delta rivers and the importance of wetlands. You will also find a gift shop stocked with nature-related items.
Pine Bluff has four public school districts, a magnet elementary school and numerous private schools. The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff is the second oldest public institution in the state of Arkansas and the oldest with an African American heritage. It maintains one of the nation’s few aquaculture research programs and the only one in the state of Arkansas. Southeast Arkansas College features technical career programs as well as a 2-year college curriculum.
Agriculture is a mainstay in Pine Bluff. Jefferson County is located in the heart of a rich agricultural area deep in the Arkansas River Basin. The leading products include cotton, soybeans, cattle, rice, poultry, timber and catfish. Principle industries in the area are engaged in processing cotton, production of cottonseed oil, paper and wood products, the manufacture of wire products, poultry processing, the manufacture of electric transformers and metal fabrication. Major employers are Jefferson Regional Medical Center, Tyson Foods, Simmons Bank, Central Moloney, International Paper, the Pine Bluff Arsenal and Union Pacific Railroad.
